United States Attorney David L. Huber announced today that Thomas W. Dyke, an Assistant United States Attorney in the Western District of Kentucky, will lead the efforts of his Office in the connection with the Justice Department's nationwide Election Day Program for the upcoming November 7, 2006 general elections.

AUSA Dyke has served as the District Election Officer for the Western District of Kentucky since 2002.

In that capacity he is responsible for overseeing the District's handling of complaints of election fraud and voting rights abuses in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters.

United States Attorney Huber said, “The Department of Justice and the United States Attorney's Office consider Election fraud and voting rights abuses to be very serious matters.

Fake power of attorney racket uncovered

Ras Al Khaimah: The Criminal Court here yesterday questioned three people in connection with circulating fake power of attorney certificates.

A court official said the copies had been used in forgery cases. Police traced the copies and detained the gang members. The official said the suspects were two national sisters identified as F.M.H., 26, and M.M.H 22, and a 27-year-old Indian typist identified as S.T.

He said S.T made the fake copies and the two sisters distributed them. The sisters admitted to the court that they got copies from the typist and delivered them to another national, identified as Y.A., who distributed them.

The sisters told the court they got Dh500 for each copy they delivered to the agent. The court instructed the Public Prosecution to issue a circular to detain Y.A.

HALIFAX (CP) - Nova Scotia's attorney general wants the province's conflict-of-interest commissioner to investigate whether he breached the government's ministerial code of conduct. Murray Scott says he wrote Merlin Nunn after NDP justice critic Kevin Deveaux questioned whether Scott put the Public Prosecution Service in a perceived conflict by making a phone call over a youth justice case. Scott has admitted calling Martin Herschorn, the province's director of public prosecutions, to express concerns about a court order involving Community Services Minister Judy Streatch. Streatch has been ordered to attend a case conference later this month for a 16-year-old girl awaiting sentencing on several charges stemming from incidents at two Halifax-area group homes. Scott, the premier, and officials at the Public Prosecution Service all maintain the minister did nothing wrong by contacting Herschorn.

Attorney Boose turns self in on charges in Masilotti fraud case

FORT PIERCE -- Attorney William Boose, who represented disgraced former County Commission Tony Masilotti in land deals, surrendered to federal authorities on Monday at the U.S. District Court in Fort Pierce and posted $200,000 bond, news partner NewsChannel 5 reported..

Boose is charged with federal "honest services" fraud for knowing that Masilotti committed fraud in secret land deals but did not report it. A charging document filed against Boose Friday also said the attorney lied to federal investigators when asked about the transactions.

Supervisors find funds for sheriff, district attorney

An additional $440,306 is headed for the Solano County Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office under funding set for approval Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors.

The money - $300,877 for the sheriff and $139,429 for the district attorney in the coming year - is from a state-sponsored Supplemental Law Enforcement Services Fund.

"It's a very important appropriation from the state," said Michael Medvedoff, director of administrative services for the Sheriff's Office. "It helps a lot and we're able to do a lot with it."

This year, not only has the state increased its services fund allocation to the sheriff's office and the district attorney by about $40,000, there were also unexpected revenue increases to the services fund last year and rollover savings that will be added to its pot.
